General

The General tab provides subscriber permissions, directory settings, and other general settings, divided into three sections as shown in the figure below.

Subscriber Settings

These settings enable or disable features that appear as options in the subscriber menu, as well as password-related settings. They are only voiced (and available) to the subscriber if they are enabled here.

SettingDescription
Allow call blockingAllow the subscriber to enable call blocking (DND) so that all transfers from the auto attendant are sent directly to voice mail.

Station-to-station and DID calls are not affected by call blocking, only transfers from the auto attendant.
Allow call screeningAllow the subscriber to enable call screening.

If your system uses a SIP integration, call screening will not work because SIP does not support supervised transfers.
Allow notificationsAllow the subscriber to edit notification settings over the phone. Otherwise, notifications can only be edited in Mailbox Administration.
Allow message archivingAllow the subscriber to archive messages in any of nine archive folders. If disabled, the subscriber will have only one saved folder.
Disable mailbox passwordDetermines when a password is required for login:
  • No means a password is always required;
  • From extension calls means a password is not required if the subscriber is calling from the mailbox's extension;
  • All calls means that a password is never required.
Minimum password lengthDefines the minimum number of digits required for a password when the subscriber sets or changes the password over the phone.

This does not affect passwords set by the PMS, which often are limited to 4 digits. This is a limitation of the PMS protocol specifications, not the VMS.
Enforce secure passwordsIf enabled, prevents the subscriber from setting his or her password to an incremental sequence of digits (such as 1234 or 5678) or to the same digit repeated (such as 1111 or 3333).

This option is only used if the minimum password length is at least 4 digits. Otherwise, it is is automatically disabled.

The default setting for this option is disabled.

General Settings

These are miscellaneous settings that don't fit in any of the other categories:

SettingDescription
Allow language selectionAllow the subscriber to select a language the first time he or she logs into the mailbox.

Once a language is selected, it will persist until it is changed in Mailbox Administration (or at check out for a guest mailbox).

If the language is set to anything other than Default using either the PMS or Mailbox Administration, the subscriber will never be prompted to select a language.
Allow guest to transfer to the operatorIf enabled, guest subscriber menu will allow the guest to press 0 to transfer to the operator. The default setting for this option is disabled.

Directory

These settings control how the spell-by-name directory operates when accessed from the SDA for this mailbox.

SettingDescription
Play extension numberIf enabled, the system will, for each matching entry found, play the name recording and then state the extension number.

If disabled, it will play the name recording and then prompt the caller to press 1 to transfer or press * to find another match. If the caller presses * and there are no more matches, the system will exit the directory.
Allow exit to operator/If enabled, caller can press 0 to transfer to the operator at any time while in the directory.
